Teams as Building Blocks
Teams are the building blocks of project success, and therefore of organizational success. Organizations should puts policies and processes in place that explicitly support these (often cross-functional) teams. Some examples include:

  • An executive reward system that rewards functional managers (at least in part) on the degree to which they support projects.

  • A performance evaluation system that accepts input from the team member’s project manager (and possibly fellow team members) in addition to the performer’s boss.

  • Funding and flexibility to enable better communication, such as co-location or travel for face-to-face team meetings.

Excellent leadership and team building by the project manager will produce good teams, but that isn’t enough. The organization must also recognize and nurture the teams as much as it does functional departments.
