What is the Definition of a Project?
You can find several different definitions of a project, depending on the reference. Yet all of these definitions are very similar and are concisely summarized by the Project Management Institute (PMI®) in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide, Third Edition).

Project:

A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result (PMI® PMBOK® Guide, Third Edition)

The words “temporary” and “endeavor” and the phrase “unique product, service, or result” capture the three dimensions of any project: its planned results, its schedule, and its resource budget.
