Project Objectives
What does the customer expect to get from this project,
when, and for how much expenditure of resources? The
answer to that question is called the Project
Objective.
Notice
the specificity of the question – not “why,” but “what,
when, and how much.”
The question of “why” generally
relates to an expected business outcome,
often called the “goal” or “mission.” The project team
is challenged to develop a specific approach with measured results that
will satisfy the goal or mission. This specific approach, along with relevant
constraints,
is called the project objective.
When the project objective is understood and agreed among
the stakeholders (performing organizations, senior management,
team members and their line managers, and the customer),
then you have achieved the corresponding behavior of agreement.
