Phasing and Paralleling – Does it have to be one or the other?
No. It doesn’t have to be either phasing or paralleling. Many projects are scheduled with multiple tasks worked in parallel within a phase, but they may have major review points (milestones) between the phases. The following examples illustrate phasing, paralleling and a combination of the two in several real projects.

A Phased Product Development Project
The chart on the next page shows a project for the development of a new product. The project scope goes from concept through production and market launch. Not surprisingly for this type of project, it is scheduled chronologically or in phases. The output of one phase is the input to the next.
