Scheduling as part of the planning process
The schedule translates the previously made Work Breakdown Structure into a set of timed assignments. The first step of the scheduling process is to define the specific activities that must be performed to accomplish the objectives for each WBS element. Next, the team determines the dependencies between activities (predecessors, successors, and how the activities are linked together). If you can set the delivery date, then estimate the amount of time for each activity given the available resources. If you are given the delivery date, estimate the resources and activity sequences needed to meet that date.

Once the schedule is agreed, it provides the basis for direction setting, assessing project progress, taking corrective action, and reporting project status.
